Interactive cutting of 3D surface meshes

چکیده
Engineers and scientists from many fields are using three-dimensional reconstruction for visualization and analysis of physical and abstract data. Beyond observing the recreated objects in artificial space, it is desirable to develop methods that allow one to interactively manipulate and alter the geometry in an intuitive and efficient manner. In the case of medical data, a baseline interactive task would be to simulate cutting, removal and realignment of tissue. In order to provide for operational realism, the underlying mathematical calculations and topological changes need to be invisible to the user so that the user feels as though they are performing the task just as they would on the real world counterpart of the reconstructed object. We have developed a method that allows the user to directly sketch the desired cut contour on a three-dimensional surface in a manner that simulates dragging scissors through fabric. This new method can be employed interactively, allowing the user to perform the task in an intuitive, natural manner. r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Interactive Mesh Fusion Based on Local 3D Metamorphosis
This paper proposes a new mesh modeling scheme, called mesh fusion, based on three-dimensional (3D) meshbased metamorphosis. We establish the attachment from a part of one mesh to a part of another with smooth boundaries, employing the traditional cutting and pasting operation in conjunction with a combination of meshes, applying the idea of 3D metamorphosis. We also offer an algorithm for adju...
متن کاملInteractive Cutting of Thin Deformable Objects
Simulation of cutting is essential for many applications such as virtual surgical training. Most existing methods use the same triangle mesh for both visualization and collision handling, although the requirements for them in the interactive simulation are different. We introduce visual-collision binding between high-resolution visual meshes and low-resolution collision meshes, and thus extend ...
متن کاملGeometry Based Connectivity Compression of Triangular Meshes
Many interactive 3D graphics applications like manufacturing, design, networked-gaming, need to access 3D data remotely. Transfer of large data sets consumes lot of bandwidth and space. In this paper we describe a lossless scheme for compressing 3D-surface data, represented by triangular meshes. We present a new algorithm which exploits geometry (vertex) information for encoding connectivity. T...
متن کاملInteractive Cutting of the Skull for Craniofacial Surgical Planning
We present a prototype surgical planning system that simulates cutting and positioning operations on rigid objects such as the human skull, with realistic haptic and visual feedback. Our positioning interface allows users to grab and manipulate objects while sensing the interaction forces between the object being manipulated and other objects in the environment. The cutting interfaces support p...
متن کاملInteractive Modeling with Mesh Surfaces
In the world of modern surface design tools, a mesh is simply a data structure – a scaffold for higher-order basis functions which specify the “true” surface. The price paid for this analytic continuity is complexity in seemingly-simple tasks such as refinement, composition, and direct manipulation. But consider the lowly triangle mesh. With the ability to split and merge edges wherever more de...
